Excess speed on Hull Road

Good afternoon,

Today I have spent a considerable period of time in Hornsea, much of which has been around lunchtime on Hull Road by the allotments. 

Experience - both of policing Hornsea in the past, and living there - has taught me that the majority of those breaking the speed limits in the town are coming for a fish & chip lunch or are late on their way to/from work or the school run. Today, I targeted the lunchtime rush. I am sure that my extremely visible presence will have slowed many of the usual suspects down, but a few still lacked observation skills and were stopped to be given the waggy finger treatment. I have often found, in my near quarter of a century of policing, that speaking to people has a far greater impact than fining people when the speeds would attract a penalty notice from a camera van or an automated camera, but are not ridiculous. Thankfully today, the people I stopped were over, but not by much, and there are very few drivers - if any - who can, hand on heart, say they have never broken the speed limit, at least by accident. 

Speaking to local residents who were out and about in the glorious sunshine, there was a fair amount of interest in the Community Speedwatch scheme. This has been very successful in a lot of areas and empowers you - the public - to have an impact on the speed of motorists in your area.
